Senior Support Engineer· OperationsNeutral
Applied for a Senior Support Engineer position at OpenAI back in April. A couple of days after applying a recruiter reached out and asked some AI related questions about about my background. The recruiter said they'd follow-up shortly with the technical challenge if the team likes my resume. A few hours after the recruiter conversation they followed-up as promise by phone to talk more about the technical round and my availability.
The information I was provided by the recruiter was to make sure I had my environment(API keys, Codex and such) setup to go straight into an coding exercise. The coding round was a series of API questions and vibe coding. Nothing too insane, but they did want you to explain each line of code that was generated in your own words.
After passing the technical round I spoke with a hiring manager, which asked about my background and what are my goals down the road. We also talked about just general non-work related topics. It was an overall chill conversation.
The hiring manager followed up the day after the hiring manager conversation and setup the virtual onsite. The onsite was broken into three parts: Behavioral, Troubleshooting and Cross Collaboration. This process took 90mins to complete.
Once completed the recruiter told me I had all good feedback and would be doing one more interview with the Vice President of Support. The recruiter later followed up letting me know the VP would be gone for a while and they'd like to finish the interviews as quickly as possible, so they'll be substituting the interview for another member.
From here it went interview downhill experience wise. The person I interviewed with said that they were a GTM Sales Leader. I talked about my experience troubleshooting APIs and my vibe coding experience. I was asked how my experience relates to the role I'm applying for and if I was sure I'd like to do the role I applied for. I asked pointing out similarities with my current day to day and the position posting. It end with "If you're a good fit we'll reach out".
The recruiter did follow-up a week later saying the team didn't find me to be a good fit. Overall it wasn't bad experience but I'd recommend waiting for the original interview if you can, or at least leadership on the team you're applying to.
Whole experience took a month
